Britain’s oldest house discovered, dating back more than 10,500yrs
It was previously thought that the hunter gathers of Mesolithic Britain were nomadic, never putting down roots or leaving traces of occupation. This idea is being challenged with the unearthing of what looks to be the most significant discovery of its time - the excavation of a wooden dwelling dating back more than 10,500yrs. At the time, the end of the last ice age, Britain was still connected to continental Europe by a string of hills across the English Channel known as the Weald-Artois rock ridge. (more)
 Stonehenge’s 'Twin' Found:
Archeologists discover ancient wooden circle at famous site
Magnetometric imaging has shown an, as-yet unexcavated,
wooden circle, or "henge" less than 1000 yards away from
Stonehenge. It has the same orientation as the more famous site: north-east to south-west. This finding only further augments last year's discovery of “Bluehenge”, which is located on the Avon River one mile from Stonehenge. In 2006, there was a further announcement of discoveries in a neighboring area of Durrington where the foundations of houses were found for these ancient peoples. (more)
 MARS500: TO MARS AND BACK IN A CANISTER
June 3, 2010 was a monumental beginning of an important program when six future cosmonauts from Italy, France, China and Russia in front of a plethora of cameras and newsmen in Moscow walked into a confined space for the next 500 days, maybe even 520 days, until November 2011. The appearance of six happy space travelers marks the beginning of an experiment of living in very close quarters and spending many days together in a series of interconnected metal canisters that comprise the model of a one-way space probe to Mars. The complete round trip simulation will cover the amount of days it will take to travel to Mars and back. The real mission to Mars is already tentatively planned for 2030 ... (more).
 Solar Cycle Waking Up!
What a difference a year can make in the life of the Sun. In June of 2009, solar scientists were saying that the sunspot activity had been some of the quietest in 100 years with 264 spotless days in 2009 and 268 spotless days in 2008. However, by June 2010, sunspot AR 1081 (June 12th M-Class) was already being registered with C-class and M-class solar flares now being observed. Solar flares are categorized as A, B, C, M, or X, each category becoming more powerful, with a numerical intensity from 1 through 9 also added. Scientists met on June 8th 2010 at the National Press Club in Washington DC for the The Space Weather Enterprise Forum (http://www.nswp.gov/swef/swef_program.html), designed to discuss the fact that the sun, now understood as "variable star," is certainly waking up. Their conclusion was that between now and 2013 we may be in for very severe solar storms that can knock out power to major cities especially in the northern latitudes of the earth.
